Sarasota School District Employees Earn Raises

For the first time in five years, employees of the Sarasota County School District are receiving a 3.25 percent across-the-board raise.

Negotiations between the teachers' union and the district concluded last month in an agreement that gives raises to teachers, aides, bus drivers and other staff. The School Board and union members will vote on the new contracts in October, according to an article int the Sarasota Herald Tribune.

That means a teacher making $54,066 a year would take home an addition $1,757, a bus driver earning $20,452 would make an additional $665 annually and a custodian bringing in $28,709 would receive a raise of $933, the article states.

The article says that increases are also being considered in Manatee County through a new contract that extends to 2016, which restores some teacher pay that has been "either frozen or cut in recent years."
