Rams Fall to 0-3

Led by the combination of quarterback Grant Flessner and running back Danny Dillard, host Venice High recorded a 42-17 win over Riverview High on Friday night.

Recap: Playing in front of another capacity crowd at Powell-Davis Stadium, the host Indians jumped out to a 21-3 lead over Riverview in the game's first 20 minutes and 42 seconds. Each of Venice's first three scoring drive encompassed at least seven plays and covered at least 73 yards. Vaunted running back Danny Dillard opened the scoring with a 10-yard run with 8:41 left in the first quarter. Quarterback Grant Flessner capped the Indians' second series with a 20-yard scoring run and closed out a 90-yard drive with a 65-yard touchdown run. The Rams' lone score of the first half was a 26-yard field goal by Evan Potoka.

The Indians made it a 35-3 ballgame within the first 5:24 of the second half. Following a bad snap on a punt, Dillard closed out a 19-yard scoring drive with a 13-yard run and Flessner hooked up with Robert Osborn for a 63-yard scoring pass. With 2:17 left in the third quarter, Riverview quarterback Tater Williams scored on an 8-yard run. Dillard ran for a 20-yard touchdown on the final play of the third quarter. The Rams turned a Charles Grauel fumble recovery into a 10-yard Darian Dailey touchdown run with 1:38 left.

Play of the game: Dillard extended Venice's second scoring drive with a 25-yard run on a fourth-and-1 from the Rams' 48. He appeared to be stopped after picking up the first down, but kept his feet to add to his yardage total.

Star(s) of the game: Dillard collected 187 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries, while Flessner accounted for 236 yards of total offense, including 150 rushing yards, and three touchdowns.

Thanks for the publicity, but the Venice QB is Grant Flessner, not Blake. Blake is his older brother. :)
