Sweltering Temperatures Kick Off Sarasota's Week

Forecasters say rain chances are low now, but that won't last throughout the week.

Sarasota residents hoping for a break from the heat aren’t likely to get it over the next few days.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office say the Tampa Bay area is in for some sweltering weather Monday, Aug. 12 and Tuesday, Aug. 13 with highs in the mid-90s. The heat index is expected to climb into the low 100s, which means a sauna might have nothing on the great outdoors as the week kicks off.

Rain chances are almost nonexistent at the start of the week, but meteorologist Robert Garcia says folks shouldn’t get too use to the sunshine.

“By the end of the week, (we’re) back in the wetter pattern,” he said. “It might be a little wetter than typical.”

Garcia said there’s a patch of tropical moisture that could bring plenty of rain our way as the week winds down. Right now, chances for rain are about 10 percent on Monday and 30 percent Tuesday and Wednesday. But, they jump up to 60 percent Thursday and Friday.

While severe weather isn’t anticipated at this point, Garcia said it’s always a good idea for Bay area residents to keep their eyes on the sky.
