Kazu's 2.0

I tried this "Japanese Gastropub" (their description) on a recent Friday night. This sushi/craft beer/sake bar and eatery recently moved from Siesta Key to Gulf Gate.
We started with the coconut shrimp and a house salad with ginger dressing. The coconut shrimp were hot and crispy when they arrived. Nicely cooked and tasty. I ordered the house salad because I often get a good read on a sushi restaurant based on their ginger dressing. This may sound odd, but really, if they bother to take the time to craft a special ginger dressing it tells you something about the care they give to the rest of their food. Sushi is one of those things you can fake very well!!! So, the salad had a very thick bland ginger dressing. Not a good sign of things to come...
This being my first time to Kazu's 2.0 I tried to order what I consider some basics. I love sushi, and I consider myself an adventurous eater, but I won't go full out in a sushi place until they gain my confidence, and they will only gain my confidence if they can get the basics right. I ordered the caliente roll, fresh salmon sushi, and white tuna sushi. The caliente roll is a spicy tuna roll topped with fresh tuna and a slice of fresh jalapeño. The taste was good, but the roll was very heavy on the rice. It had very little filling in it. The sushi pieces were disappointing. The salmon was served at  room temperature, which made it somewhat unpleasant to eat, and then the white tuna was refrigerator cold. This made me very nervous about the way they store and handle their fish.
Bottom Line: I am very picky about where I eat sushi, and tried Kazu's 2.0 on the reccommendation of friends. I'm sorry to say that I would not go back.
