Rev-el-ry

This is a fairly new place on University where Milonga used to be, and Johnny Carino's before that. Walking in, it looks like the decor was left over from one of the previous restaurants. No warmth, no character. Could have been a Ponderosa (anyone remember that place??!!) for all I knew.
This is another place that describes itself as a "gastro pub", which is supposed to mean a pub that serves high quality food (as opposed to your typical bar food). So we are handed a drink menu with pages of draft and bottled beer being the focus. Then we are also handed a paper printout of beer on draft. A little confused, we ask the waitress and she said that we should go by the paper printout, not the extensive list in their leather bound drink menu. I guess thats just kind of a "wish list" and the paper printout is what is there in reality.
On to the menu. I had a really hard time deciding what to order. This was a date night with my husband after all, so I like to get a little more than a pizza or a burger that I would eat any other night of the week. The only problem was this, the menu is thoroughly uninspiring. I think I sat there for 10 minutes, asking the waitress for more time twice, because I could not find anything that sounded interesting. The apps are things like fried shrimp, tuna tartar, wings, etc. The main courses are burgers, sandwiches, pizza, and a few things like ribeye steak, chicken madiera, catch of the day, oh, and there is a duck dish. Now, I love duck, but I hesitate to order it at a place that a) looks the way this place looks, and b) has burgers , pizza, and wings on the menu. Do you know what I'm saying??
Anyway, I order the Stilton Tart for an appetizer, and the grilled vegetable sandwich for my main course. The tart came out a very unappetizing shade of brown. It was very soggy in the middle, and tasted like it had been previously frozen and reheated. Almost like something you would buy a big box of at BJ's in their frozen appetizer section.
The grilled vegetable sandwich was fine. It had zucchini, red pepper, spinach, grilled onions, and goat cheese on it. It was not a bad sandwich, but it's not something you won't find anywhere else either. You could easily put this together at home.
Bottom Line: Unfortunately I predict this will become just another name on the list of "restaurants that have come and gone" from this location.
