Volunteers and staff from Mote, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo released Tomobella and her calf Sarabella Thursday afternoon off of a boat ramp at  on Sarasota's City Island.

Tomobella was rescued July 19 in a Siesta Key canal and her dependant calf, Sarabella, was captured to keep them together, according to FWC and Mote staff. The manatee was acting lethargic and disoriented, according to Kevin Baxter, a spokesman for Florida Fish and Wildlife.

Tomobella received treatment at Lowry Park Zoo where Sarabella spent time with her.

Mote is actually quite familiar with Tomobella. Mote's Manatee Research Program have documented her in area waters since 1993 by keeping a log of photographs, according to Hayley Rutger, spokeswoman for Mote.

"Photos are entered into the statewide Manatee Individual Photo-Identification System (MIPS) maintained by the U.S. Geological Survey, the FWC and Mote," Rutger wrote to Patch in an email. "Photo surveys play an important role in documenting manatee survival rates and population trends."
