Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium was founded in 1955 by Dr. Eugenie Clark. Originally located in Cape Haze (40 miles south of Sarasota), it moved to Sarasota's City Island in 1978. <br><br>Mote is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to marine research and preservation. It is an international hub for scientists who are performing studies on marine life and ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico, offering community and youth outreach and education programs.<br><br>Mote Marine Aquarium resides on the organization's 10.5-acre campus, and is open to the public. The aquarium displays over 100 species of aquatic life, including small sharks, stingrays, sea horses and manatees.
