"Active," "dynamic," "open-minded" and "green" are words that spring from the tongues of members of the congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Sarasota. With a strong tradition of social advocacy and justice, the congregational body of the UU incorporates and welcomes people of diverse faiths and backgrounds united by a common belief in humanity, the inherent worth and dignity of each person and of the earth. The flaming chalice, originally designed during WWII by Hans Deutsch, was meant to symbolize sacrifice and love, and has been adapted to the more modern symbol incorporating also two circles. The building itself is designed in the style of the Sarasota School of Architecture, including the large picture windows on either side of the congregation hall, bringing nature in from outdoors.
