The Pineapple and Ringling Boulevard roundabout is open to traffic but the Palm Avenue roundabout will not open until June 15.
1. The Pineapple and Ringling Boulevard roundabout is open to traffic. The roundabout quietly opened Friday, but traffic cannot continue west on Ringling toward Palm Avenue where the other roundabout is being completed. That is expected to reopen June 15. 2. A memorial service for Longboat Key Police Chief and former Sarasota Mayor Al Hogle will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Robarts Arena. The burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72, at 3 p.m. Hogle died May 14 in a motorcycle crash while vacationing in North Carolina. 3. The president has proclaimed May 15 at Peace Officers Memorial day and ordered flags to fly at half staff.
1. Flags will fly at half staff across Florida and the rest of the country today in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. President Barack Obama issued a proclamation designating May 15, 2012, as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of all federal, state, and local officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. The President called upon all units of government to direct that the flag of the United States be flown at half-staff Tuesday. Gov. Longboat Key Police Chief Al Hogle died in a motorcycle accident while on vacation in North Carolina. Hogle served for 30 years in the Sarasota Police Department and was a former Sarasota mayor and former Bradenton police chief.
A former Sarasota mayor, and Longboat Key's police chief, Al Hogle, died Monday afternoon in a motorcycle crash while vacationing in North Carolina, according to the Longboat Key Police Department. "He was highly respected by the public and entire department and town," Capt. Monica Quarmby told Patch Monday evening. "It's definitely a great loss." Information about services is not yet available, Quarmby said, and the department hopes to find out more information Tuesday.
