Baltimore Orioles topped the Minnesota Twins 5-3 at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota.
The Baltimore Orioles started off their return to Sarasota with a 5-3 win Saturday afternoon against the Minnesota Twins. Nearly 6,000 fans attended the home opener at Ed Smith Stadium for the Orioles' fourth year in Sarasota. New addition outfielder Trayvon Robinson was the star of the game, knocking a two-run homer out of the park, according to Orioles.com: Trayvon Robinson's two-run homer in the eighth inning gave the O's a 5-3 victory over the Twins in Saturday's Grapefruit League opener at Ed Smith Stadium, which featured a moment of silence and video tribute for Orioles great Earl Weaver, who passed away last month at age 82. Game, Gates and Parking The Baltimore Orioles take on the Minnesota Twins at 1:05 p.m. Gates open at 11:05 a.m. Parking is available beside Ed Smith Stadium on the north and south sides of 12th Street. Olympian swimmer Michael Phelps is in Sarasota to film a Golf Channel special at Laurel Oaks.
Olympian champion and Maryland native Michael Phelps is not in Sarasota to swim the Gulf of Mexico, but is out of the water taking batting practice with the Baltimore Orioles and hitting the links. Phelps has been spotted around Sarasota this week, and is chiefly in town to film a Golf Channel special for The Haney Project, which chronicles Phelps' attempt to jumpstart a professional golf career, The Baltimore Sun reports. The Sun also reported the filming is taking place at Laurel Oak Country Club. But Phelps couldn't pass up a chance to take batting practice with his hometown team, the Baltimore Orioles. The Baltimore Orioles announced that their exhibition game on Wednesday, March 6 will be played against Team Spain at 1:05 p.m. at Ed Smith Stadium, as opposed to Team Brazil as originally listed. Season ticket holders at Ed Smith Stadium will receive complimentary tickets as part of their season package to the World Baseball Classic exhibition game, while all single game tickets will go on sale January 26. Prices for the WBC exhibition will be $15 for Infield and Lower Box (regularly $24 and $22), $10 for Reserved Grandstand (regularly $18) and $5 for the Left Field Pavilion (regularly $16). Orioles Spring Training attendance dips in 2012 compared to 2011, but this year's figures don't include attendance for college games.
The Baltimore Orioles Spring Training couldn't top its record attendance in 2011 during this year's season at Ed Smith Stadium. The O's drew 106,398 people at its games this year, averaging about 7,093 people per game, according to numbers released by Florida Sports today. The comparison isn't complete yet as Florida Sports did not count attendance played against college teams or minor league teams — the Orioles played against Florida Southern College and State College of Florida — in addition to playing one less home game overall than last year. Baltimore Orioles minor league players to play at Ed Smith Stadium complex through June.
The Baltimore Orioles might have flown north back to Maryland to play ball, but minor league players are still in Sarasota honing their game. Minor league players will participate in games on Field 4 at Ed Smith Stadium complex starting today at noon against the Minnesota Twins. There is no charge to attend the games. It is odd, but the O's relationship with Southwest is more so because BWI is a very successful Southwest hub. Still, it is odd to be promoting Southwest in Sarasota given what happened.   more ›
