City Commission Approves Red Light Cameras

The Sarasota Police Department identified 10 of the most dangerous intersections for the cameras to be installed.

On Monday evening the Sarasota City Commission unanimously approved a contract with American Traffic Solutions to install red light cameras at 11 of the most dangerous intersections in Sarasota. Capt. Paul Sutton of the Sarasota Police Department said the city would see significant results quickly after installation. He cited studies done in New York City, Philadelphia and Texas that showed red light cameras not only decrease the amount of crashes at an intersection but also can be a way for the city to generate money. In NYC, Sutton said the city has had cameras since 1994 and has seen a 41 percent reduction in collisions and 35 percent reduction in fatalities since installation of the cameras.
