Circus playground shading also nearing completion at Payne Park.
Watch out for flying saucers at Payne Park. The city completed the installation of the Payne Park nine-hole beginner's disc golf course this week. Bryan Moore, Florida's Professional Disc Golf Association state coordinator, a Sarasota resident, initiated the idea with the city to have a disc golf course at the park. The City Commission approved the funding, which will be under $10,000. Players use a variety of sizes and weights of discs called a putter, approach and driver, and most people play with three to five discs. Serious players use a bag of 10 to 15 discs, according to Moore. You can pick these up at area sporting goods stores for $7 to $15. Payne Park playground will be a construction site again as it will be closed starting today to install a shade structure. The playground, which partially opened in June, is expected to re-open on or before Dec. 14. The shade structure will cover the small children playground (ages 5-12) as well as the music area, providing relief from the sun as requested by residents after temperatures were found to be too hot on the plastic playground equipment. The installation will include the placement of support columns and cables and will require the entire Payne Park playground to be temporarily closed, according to the city. A circus-themed playground and the first-ever Sarasota Sports Festival will take place Saturday at Payne Park.
It's going to be a circus at Payne Park this weekend. Maybe not a full-blown big top, but with a new circus-themed playground set to open, circus performers helping celebrate and the Sarasota Sports Festival on Saturday, it's as close as you can get to the real thing. The playground will open Saturday — the same day as the first-ever Sarasota Sports Festival. Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will perform several free interactive CircusFit performances throughout the day to celebrate the opening of the playground. Ringling Bros. will perform three free CircusFit shows near the playground at: 9:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:45 p.m. The performances will be interactive with the audience and include fun activities such as a laugh-a-thon, …
