Motion To Fire Auditor And Clerk Nadalini Fails

City Commissioner Terry Turner's motion to fire City Auditor and Clerk Pamela Nadalini failed after citing her surety bond would cost more than $9,000.

A move to fire the Sarasota City Auditor and Clerk with cause failed Monday afternoon after some details of her financial situation were revealed. City Commissioner Terry Turner moved to dismiss Auditor and Clerk Pamela Nadalini after the cost of her surety bond was found to be more than 20 times the amount of the city manager's bond. The cost of the surety bonds by insurance agencies are determined by the individual's financial situation and credit ratings. Instead, the City Commission voted 4-1 to approve surety bonds for the three positions. Surety bonds are required by the City Charter for charter officials, and those bond are in place to gaurantee their performance for their duties. City voters defeated a housekeeping charter …

Once you elect someone like Nadalini you have to realize your stuck with them. It usually takes that proverbial 'act of congress' to get rid of them...just ask Turner. In fact in his frustration he'll leave, not her.   more ›

Should The New City Manager Have More Power?

Proposed charter amendment would split the City Auditor and Clerk into two positions and shift more oversight and responsibilities under the watch of the City Manager.

Update/Related Story: Commissioner Paul Caragiulo proposes his own charter amendment to have city voters elect their own mayor. Earlier: Government is a system of checks and balances and a group backed by City Commissioner Terry Turner wants to move some of those functions to the city manager. A charter referendum from the Citizens for a Better Sarasota has garnered enough signatures — 3,297 — and will appear on the November ballot, as first reported by The Herald-Tribune.  Supervisor of Elections Kathy Dent certified the petition Friday (which can be viewed as a PDF beside this story) and the proposed amendment will be presented during the evening portion of the City Commission meeting tonight at City Hall. I agree there should be no consolidation of power. As a rule of thumb a system of checks and balances works best. The amendment might be well intentioned as most proposed rules and regulations usually are but the unintended consequences left to those who are not so honorable at any moment in time can lead to disasterous consequences.   more ›
