Siesta Beach Park Upgrades Head For Public Discussion

Folks wanting to weigh in on the proposed improvements to Siesta Beach Park will have a chance to do so at a hearing on Tuesday.

Siesta Beach Park improvements costs are rising and so will the conversation about the proposals during a Tuesday open-house meeting. The design of the Siesta Beach Park improvements will discussed at a public meeting frm 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. Michael the Archangel Church, 5394 Midnight Pass Road on Siesta Key. There will be no formal presentation at the open-house-style meeting people can come anytime during the event set up by Sarasota County Public Works and Parks and Recreation. The price tag of the project has long been a hot topic when the park's upgrades are discussed. I totally agree with Ed; residents must decide the fate of Siesta Beach, not tourists.....who will come anyway because Siesta Beach is beautiful, none like it. I totally agree with Betsy; lifeguards, expanded parking, adequate garbage control & clean rest rooms PLEASE - Do not spend millions on a project that we do NOT NEED; people will always come to Siesta Beach......we don't need modernization…   more ›

Sarasota County Restructures Public Works Staff

County Administrator Randall Reid announced sweeping changes in county government staff assignments for Public Works and related departments.

The shake-up continues at the Sarasota County Administration Building as County Administrator Randall Reid announced major staff changes Monday. "While I believe we are a sound organization overall, there are changes in our organizational structure that we feel are necessary to restore confidence and address the challenges ahead," Reid wrote in an email to staff. "We recognize that past efforts to consolidate services under the Operations and Maintenance Business Center have not been totally successful and this area has been undergoing administrative review. Initially, we are focusing on realigning workflow and skills within Operations and Maintenance, Environmental Utilities and Public Works." The new arm of county government is called …

County Government Starts Fraud Hotline

Suspect government waste or fraud? Now you can call a hotline or mail Sarasota County Government to have someone look into it.

Sarasota County officials have launched a toll-free hotline for anyone to call in suspected government fraud, waste and abuse. The new number is 855-506-0304. People who call are led through voice-prompted instructions and can speak to a person anytime, including holidays. "We must do everything we can to prevent fraud, waste and abuse in county government," said County Administrator Randall Reid. "The hotline also provides a way for the public and employees to anonymously report suspected fraud without any retaliation." School Playgrounds Could Open Up To Neighborhoods

Sarasota County School Board and County Commission members are discussing the possibility of allowing access to school playgrounds and fields to neighborhoods after school hours and on the weekends.

Taking the kids to the playground at your neighborhood school might become possible if the Sarasota County School Board and County Commission come to an agreement. The two boards discussed Wednesday morning at a joint session inside the County Administration Building about opening up schools for community use after hours and on the weekends — especially ball fields and playgrounds. County Administrator Randall Reid said he will work with Schools Superintendent Lori White and city managers to discuss shared resources and how and when the schools can open up their resources. Schools all over the USA are open for after hours and weekend use. Take a look at your annual Property Tax Bill and tell me where the biggest chunk goes... to the Schools! Now why can't we the Tax Payers use this Resource? We pay for it, over and over again. And we allow paranoid namby-pamby administrators to steal this right away from us, with lame excuses.
