Tuesday is Election Day in Sarasota. There are nine people running for three seats for Sarasota City Commission. There is only one incumbent in the race, Dick Clapp, as Mayor Kelly Kirschner decided not to run for reelection in District three and Fredd Atkins' (District one) decided to retire. Sarasota Patch will be at the final Sarasota County Festival Steering Committee meeting Monday afternoon as they try to hammer out a final business plan to present to the Tourism Development Council and the Sarasota Board of County Commissioners. In what is mostly a light agenda, the Sarasota City Commissioners will meet Monday evening. They will discuss a payment in lieu of parking trust fund. Early voting for the City Commission district election begins today and runs through Sunday March 6. Registered voters within the City of Sarasota can vote at the Supervisor of Elections Office, 101 S. Washington during the following days and times: Election Day is Tuesday, March 8. Just three of the nine City Commission candidates have purchased campaign signs. Only one of the candidates began fundraising before 2011.
Campaign finance reports through January 14 show all nine Sarasota City commission candidates loaned themselves money to get their campaigns started. Four are depending heavily on their own checkbooks. With one exception, all of the candidates did not start serious fundraising until late in 2010. In District Two, incumbent Commissioner Dick Clapp has raised a total of $3,000; the majority is $2,000 he loaned to his campaign. His opponent, Paul Caragiulo has $6,025, the most of any candidate; the sum includes a $1,000 loan. In District Three, two of the three candidates are self-financing. Pete Theisen has $639.75, of which $638.21 is a loan. He has raised $1.54 in campaign contributions. Shannon Snyder raised $3,950.40, of which $3,250.40 …
