Macklemore's Thrift Shop: Does Sarasota Goodwill Use Hit Song?

Local Goodwill delicately handles with what to do with Macklemore's 'Thrift Shop' hit song.

Hey Sarasota, can we go thrift shopping?  A No. 1 hit about thrift store shopping and wowing the ladies at the club "grandpa style" is both a curse and a blessing for thrift shops. If you haven't heard the song that also features Ryan Lewis and Wanz , it's a hip-hop song about shopping at thrift stores, name checks Goodwill, and is about how it's not necessarily the clothes that make a man. It's funny, sarcastic and has obscene language that prevents some thrift shops from totally embracing it. The rapper will perform the song this week on Saturday Night Live. He even filmed part of the music video at a Seattle Goodwill, which embraces the song and even sells Macklemore T-shirts to benefit its job training and education programs. An Idaho …

PHOTOS: North Trail Goodwill Grand Opening

Goodwill Manasota's 30,000-square-foot store opened Tuesday evening to shoppers.

Like a good neighbor, Goodwill is there. Goodwill Manasota might want to borrow the State Farm jingle for its new all-in-one store on the North Trail called the Peggy & Don Roberts Good Neighbor Center, named after the retired chief executive and his wife Peggy, the also retired president of housing for the organization. The store, 5150 N. Tamiami Trail, had its grand opening Tuesday evening to shoppers and supporters, and the 30,000 square feet features more than just clothes, furniture and jewelry.  But beyond the granddad's clothes where many of folk will look incredible, there are community resources inside the store. The Goodwill features a Job Connection center where the community can be connected with employers in Manatee, Sarasota …

Thief Steals $5,000 In Tools From Goodwill Manasota Trucks

Thieves broke into three Goodwill Manasota maintenance trucks Tuesday taking hand tools

Goodwill Industries Manasota is asking for the community's help after $5,000 worth of tools were stolen from three of its maintenance trucks Tuesday. Goodwill discovered that thieves had cut through a parking lot fence at the organization's facilities parking lot on 15th Street East in Sarasota, breaking into three trucks and stealing $5,000 worth of hand tools, according to Goodwill. "We are a service-based industry and the shameful theft of these tools hits us hard. But it also strikes at the community we serve," said Bob Rosinsky, president of Goodwill Manasota in a statement. "We're all victims of this crime. These thieves are preying on the good will of the Sarasota-Manatee community by stealing from a nonprofit that helps thousands …

Goodwill Wins Another Round for New Store

City Commissioners refused to hear an appeal and turn down a public hearing. Circuit Court appeal could be next.

Goodwill Industries Manasota won another round Monday for its proposed super store on North Trail. The City Commissioners unanimously voted to deny hearing an appeal of the store’s site plan and turned down a request for a public hearing on the matter. An appeal of the Planning Board’s decision could still go to Circuit Court due to Monday’s decision. “I am glad that we have well informed community leaders,” the Rev. Donald Roberts of Goodwill told Patch. The commissioners chose not to comment on the motion. Folks who opposed the plan were vocal as they exited the meeting, hurling insults at the commission. The 30,000-square-foot superstore will be relocated to 5100 N. Tamiami Trail, scheduled for a January 2013 opening and has the same …

The name of Goodwill is a misnomer. They are now a taxable entity (their retail stores) as opposed to Salvation Army retail stores which is non-taxable. Salvation Army indeed does much more 'goodwill' to citizens and communities than the so-called GOODWILL.   more ›

Goodwill Circulating Petition to Deny Appeal

Goodwill Industries Manasota circulated a petition on Twitter to get people to show support for its planned super store, in advance of a Dec. 12 appeal hearing.

Goodwill Industries Manasota is trying to rally community support behind its approved super store for North Trail, which faces a challenge by a citizens' group. The store is using social media to encourage supporters to sign a petition to deny the appeal, filed by Robert M. Casella, Melvin L. Harner, and Scott Eller, who are members of Citizens for a Responsible North Trail. "Please sign the petition and give Goodwill Industries Manasota the opportunity to continue to serve our neighbors..., " the organization tweeted from @GoodwillFL The petition states: "Deny the appeal to overturn the decision Give Goodwill Industries Manasota the opportunity to continue to serve our neighbors and friends at North Trail with jobs and our Good Neighbors …

Goodwill Appeal on Fast Track

Sarasota City Commission will hear an appeal on Dec.12 about the proposed Goodwill superstore on North Tamiami Trail.

Sarasota's City Commission will hear an appeal on Dec. 12 to the appoved development of a 30,000-square-foot Goodwill superstore on North Tamiami Trail. The appeal will be heard at 3:30 p.m., at City Hall in Room 112, when the commission is scheduled for its informal meeting. Goodwill requested that the commission move up the date for the hearing from January, because of the length of time it will take to build the superstore. The Rev. Donald Roberts made the request, so that the store may have a Jan. 1, 2013 opening. "We're requesting the city to fast track a meeting in December for us so we know one way or another," Roberts said. The reason being is that the store's lease is up on Dec. 31, 2012, and the store wants to have everything …

Sharon brings up a common mistake. We do not dislike GoodWill and have no objection to their existing retail store in our area. However, this project is not a simple GoodWill store. 11,000 square feet will be dedicated to receiving tractor-trailer loads of goods from 5 other GoodWill locations throughout Manatee and Sarasota County. These goods will be processed, sorted, compacted in industrial …   more ›
