Greek Glendi Festival Kicks Off Today

The 29th Annual Festival features great food, traditional greek music and dance, a children's area an a market.

The 29th Annual Greek Glendi Festival kicks off at St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church today and runs through the weekend. Florida’s largest authentic Greek Glendi Festival attracts as many as 17,000 visitors over four days. Each year more than 350 volunteers — average age of 70 — spend months preparing for the festival. The church volunteers have gathered and cooked and planned for this festival every year since 1984. Husband and wife volunteers John and Olga Olnick, ages 99 and 95 respectively, the festival is an opportunity to spend time with fellow parishioners to prepare for and stage the event. The grand opening ceremony begins at 11 a.m. today. Festival hours are 11a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The festival is open …

We really go for the food, but that was seriously not good last year. Burnt moussaka, completely unseasoned chicken, among other issues, the food was so bad we're not planning on returning this year. We weren't alone, friends with us and people at our table had similar opinions. We thought they had professionals helping them with the food but the dining output was very amateurish last year.   more ›

Get Your Greek On

Greek Glendi is in full swing with great food, a marketplace, music, dancing and more.

In 28 years of putting on the Greek Glendi, the congregation at St. Barbara's Greek Orthodox Church has learned a few tricks about planning, organizing and rallying the troops.  It takes troops to peel 1,200 pounds of potatoes, cut 1,500 pounds of feta,   cook 6,000 souvlaki, and prepare 5,000 gyros. And a trip through the kitchen reveals how much organization goes into putting together one of the biggest four-day festivals in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Color-coded maps hang on the wall, pans of food line the freezers, pots boil on the stove. Barrels of soups and sauces are stored in giant refrigerators. 5 Things: MTO Mural Announcement Today

Plans for the future of artist MTO's mural on Tube Dude plant will be discussed today at noon.

1. Another Sarasota Chalk Festival storyline will soon come to a close as Scott Gerber of Tube Dude and Denise Kowal from the Sarasota Chalk Festival, along with city officials and dignitaries will discuss plans today at noon for the MTO Mural and the Rosemary District neighborhood around the Tube Dude plant.  The city had sent a letter to Gerber requesting the mural be removed, but he had told Patch he objects. Patch also profiled the man's hands who were used for inspiration on the mural, and suffice to say, he's not a gangster.
