Fort De Soto Manatee Rider Arrested And Charged

Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez was arrested for illegal ride on a manatee in late September.

The September manatee rider at Fort De Soto Park was finally arrested and charged Saturday—more than seven weeks after she turned herself in to authorities. Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 53 years old, was arrested and charged Saturday, Nov. 24 for violating the Manatee Sanctuary Act. Gutierrez had been photographed sitting on and riding a manatee in Fort De Soto Park on Sept. 30. After her picture had been published by media sources, Gutierrez turned herself in to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday, Oct. 2, but investigators initially said they couldn't charge her because they believed for this charge they had to have witnessed it. Sea Cow Rider Will Not Face Charges After Turning Herself In

Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez claimed that she didn't realize riding a manatee is illegal.

A woman caught in photos riding a manatee at Fort De Soto Park turned herself in Tuesday, after the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office launched a high-profile search for her. Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez, 52, called into the Pinellas County Communications Center Tuesday afternoon to say that she was the woman seen in photographs riding an endangered manatee. The photos appeared on television and were posted to online news sites, including Patch. Deputies met Gutierrez at her St. Petersburg home Tuesday afternoon, where she claimed she was new to the area and didn't realize it was illegal to touch sea cows.
