McIntosh Middle School is hosting its annual Salute To Veterans assembly on Friday.
McIntosh Middle School world history teacher Jill Rothenberg's challenge has been the same for more than a decade—make sure her students know and thank veterans. But before they could do that, some of the sixth and seventh graders she teaches had to learn what even a veteran is. "Most children didn't know who a veteran was, and most kids did not know the names of the five branches of service," Rothenberg tells Patch. Since 2000, Rothenberg has organized a large Veterans Day program at the school to put the faces of veterans in the community front and center so the kids can see who the veterans are that live in Sarasota and Manatee counties. McIntosh Middle School students got out of the classroom and into the gardens for an interactive field trip.
Students from McIntosh Middle School are getting some hands-on experience at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens this week. Students from the school participated in an interactive field trip Tuesday and Wednesday at Selby Gardens where they studied soil samples, examined water taken from bromeliads tanks to discover bugs and microorganisms as well as learned the importance of preserving Florida wildlife. On Wednesday morning, the school's seventh grade Hawks team, an advanced environmental studies group of students, took to the gardens. At one station, students studied the difference between coastal soil and organic soil located next to each other by Sarasota Bay.
