A search to replace retiring Police Chief Mikel Hollaway has returned two candidates from Florida and three out of state candidates.
Sarasota officials are set to interview five candiates for the police chief post in early October to replace retiring chief Mikel Hollaway. The city announced Friday morning five semifinalists who will be invited to come to Sarasota for interviews with City Manager Tom Barwin, one-on-one interviews with the commission, public vetting and a community forum. The candidates are: Barwin called the candidates "impressive." “Each one has the critical skill sets required to strengthen and improve trust between the community and our police department. Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway will retire with the department in October after 30 years of service with the force and two years as chief.
Updated Tuesday 5:00 p.m. Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway will say goodbye to the Sarasota Police Department in October, two years after he took over the post and 30 years with the police force. Interim County Manager Terry Lewis announced at Monday's city commissioner meeting that Hollaway, 52, tendered his resignation and he plans to retire in October. He could leave in August with the leave he has built up, but agreed to stay on longer, Lewis said. Chief Mikel Hollaway hopes the city’s Independent Police Panel, “will become a lightening rod.”
The tenor of Sarasota’s two civilian police panels is starting to emerge over these past few months. The “complaints board” is starting to review how the Sarasota Police Department evaluates citizen complaints. It meets monthly. The other panel – the Independent Police Advisory Board – meets quarterly, and convened for the second time on Friday, July 15. Chairman Elmer Berkel reminded members, “Administrative-type issues are not under our purview. We are charged to look at major policy aspects of policing in this city.” With that Berkel turned the microphone over to Police Chief Mikel Hollaway. He is a reluctant chief.
