Former Nifty Thrifty Shop Owner Sentenced To 7 Years In Prison

Roderick Sears was indicted on federal gun and drug charges in 2012 following a bust by Sarasota Police and the Sheriff's Office.

The former owner of a Sarasota consignment store will be spending the next seven years in a federal prison. U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday on Friday sentenced Roderick B. Sears, 34, of Sarasota to seven years and 10 months in federal prison for being a felon in possession of firearms. The case stems from a bust by the Sarasota Police Department and Sarasota County Sheriff's Office of the Nifty Thrifty consignment shop, 2101 19th St., on July 27, 2012, where cocaine, Hydromorphone and guns were seized in the raid. He was then indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2012 on gun charges Sears pleaded guilty on Nov. 7, 2012. Nifty Thrifty Shop Owner Faces Drug, Weapons Charges

A joint investigation by the Sarasota Police Department and Sarasota County Sheriff's Office led to the seizure of marijuana, powder and rock cocaine and a handgun.

The owner of a north Sarasota thrift store is facing drug trafficking and weapons charges following a search by Sarasota Police Department. Roderick Sears, 34, who runs the Nifty Thrifty consignment shop at 2101 19th St., was arrested and charged July 27 by Sarasota Police for: • Possession of cocaine with intent to Sell/Deliver, • Possession of Marijuana with intent to Sell/Deliver, • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, • Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon, • Trafficking in a Controlled Substance (4-14 grams)Hydromorphone; and • Driving while license suspended or revoked — 3rd Subsequent conviction.
