What does Sarasota look like if you're dangling by your neck 200 feet in the sky along side Nik Wallenda? A bit dizzying and terrifying. Lucas Colavecchio of Sarasota HuB released footage and posted on YouTube of Wallenda's Tuesday walk atop a wire in Sarasota giving a rare vantage point of the city. Nik Wallenda performed a 600 feet walk 200 feet above U.S. 41 earlier Tuesday morning.
Nik Wallenda, a Sarasota resident known for his fantastic feats of wire walking, performed a 600 feet walk 200 feet above U.S. 41 Tuesday morning. "I truly love this city and anything I can do to shine an international spotlight and attract more visitors, I'm more than willing to do," Wallenda said. From 200 feet up, Wallenda got a great view of downtown Sarasota. "It looks amazing. Just as amazing as it does down here. It's a beautiful city," Wallenda said. Nik Wallenda crossed U.S. 41 in Sarasota 200 feet in the sky on a wire to help promote his Circus Sarasota show.
He made it. Nik Wallenda successfully crossed U.S. 41 in Sarasota 200 feet above the ground Tuesday morning on a wire, providing a postcard view of the Circus City. Though most viewers either viewed it from the ground, their condo units or on TV, Sarasota on a wire looks beautiful as he stretched from the crane by the Unconditional Surrender statue going eastbound about 600 feet to a penthouse condo atop Marina Tower, Wallenda said. "It looks just as amazing as it does down here," Wallenda told Patch, about his walk that took less than 10 minutes to complete. Today's the day for Nik Wallenda's walk on a wire along Sarasota's bayfront. Here are some key things to know before you go: 1. Arrive Early. Allow yourself some time to watch the preparation of the spectacle, make some friends and bring a beach chair if you can find some space. Much of the event area will be barricaded off. Road closures and detours are suppose to start as early as 10:30 a.m. eastbound to the bayfront from St. Armands, but congestion from the detours will begin at 9 a.m. Other roads will be closed at 10:45 a.m. 2. How long is the walk? Length-wise, it's 600 feet. As for time, it's a bit of perception and guess work. Nik Wallenda will have to gain approval from Florida Department of Transportation to walk on a wire over Tamiami Trail on Jan. 29.
The only major hoop Nik Wallenda will have to walk through to walk on a wire across U.S. 41 in Sarasota is to get the OK from the Florida Department of Transportation. The Sarasota City Commission approved 5-0 Wallenda's request to walk across U.S. 41 on Tuesday, Jan. 29 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Now it's up to the Florida Department of Transportation to sign off, and it remains to be seen whether FDOT will require Wallenda to be tethered to the wire like he was over Niagara Falls. Commissioner Shannon Snyder requested that the city remove a tether requirement proposed by City Manager Tom Barwin. "Mr. Wallenda should be able to do this without a tether," Snyder said. Sarasota officials will have to do their own balancing act Tuesday night to help expedite approval of a request by Nik Wallenda to cross U.S. 41 on a highwire. Wallenda will formally make the request in front of the City Commission during the evening session, begging at 6 p.m., at City Hall to gain city approval for the daredevil act that will feature a high wire 500-600 feet long. If approved, the projected stunt date is Tuesday, Jan. 29.
