Option 5 will cost $30.5 million and other details need to be figured out including if School Avenue should be permanently closed.

A design charrette will offer residents a way to have their say in an interactive setting for how to renovate Sarasota High School's campus.
An interactive session to figure out how Sarasota High School will be renovated continues tonight at 5:30. The meeting will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, June 7, in the Conference Center at the Sarasota County Technical Institute, 4748 Beneva Road in Sarasota. The first meeting held Wednesday is an open forum for parents, school district staff, business leaders, neighbors and other community members to examine the issues involved; to learn what needs to be done to update the campus; to look at some proposed site plans and to express their expectations and concerns. There, many folks opposed using glass to enclose Building 4's breezeway, reports The Herald-Tribune: "Strong support was expressed for the options that would keep the …

School officials say the campus is too spread out and has more classrooms than what it needs — including two cafeterias and two gyms from the 1950s that cost too much to maintain. Security and out-of-date instructional spaces are other concerns that the renovated campus must have too, according to the school …

I was on the board many years ago when they added to Sarasota High School, took down the middle school and extended the high school to across School Ave. At the time the neighborhood (we were asked to be involved, they wanted to know what we thought) did not want School Ave. closed but they closed it anyway during school hours. I am very much against closing School Ave. I do not feel this is …   more ›
