Bernadette DiPino is Sarasota's first female police chief in its 110-year history.
As new Sarasota Police Chief Bernadette DiPino read her oath of office, her mother Mildred DiPino wiped tears of joy from her eyes. To the new police chief, her mother is a hero of hers. "You're the reason why women are able to be successful in this world because of your strongness and you saying you can do it and your believing in me—I couldn't be here without your strength," DiPino told her mother. DiPino was officially sworn in Friday afternoon at the Sarasota Police Department, though has been on the job since Dec. 31. She takes over for retired Police Chief Mikel Hollaway. Capt. Police Chief Mikel Hollaway is retiring Nov. 30 to start a transition period for the new police chief.
Police Chief Mikel Hollaway will start his retirement tomorrow when Capt. Paul Sutton will take over as acting police chief for the next month. City Manager Tom Barwin announced the move Friday to start a transition period for the Sarasota Police Department's preparation for Police Chief Bernadette DiPino to start Jan. 1. Hollaway was the city's first black police chief, along with other top ranks at the department, and gives way to the city's first female police chief. Sutton will also organize a City Manager's City-County Homeless Advisory Task Force in the wake of this week's news about continued police behavioral issues with the homeless. Ocean City Md. Police Chief Bernadette DiPino will replace Police Chief Mikel Hollaway who is set to retire in January.
Updated 5:15 p.m. Oct. 16 Sarasota welcomes its first-ever police chief today with the hiring of Ocean City (Md.) Police Chief Bernadette DiPino. DiPino applied after opting to retire from the Ocean City Police Department through the department's Deferred Retirement Option, which is the same option Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway chose, scheduling his retirement for January. Hollaway was originally scheduled to retire at the end of October, but agreed to delay his retirement for the transition.
