Police Chief Mikel Hollaway will start his retirement tomorrow when Capt. Paul Sutton will take over as acting police chief for the next month. City Manager Tom Barwin announced the move Friday to start a transition period for the Sarasota Police Department's preparation for Police Chief Bernadette DiPino to start Jan. 1. Hollaway was the city's first black police chief, along with other top ranks at the department, and gives way to the city's first female police chief. Updated 5:15 p.m. Oct. 16 Sarasota welcomes its first-ever police chief today with the hiring of Ocean City (Md.) Police Chief Bernadette DiPino. DiPino applied after opting to retire from the Ocean City Police Department through the department's Deferred Retirement Option, which is the same option Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway chose, scheduling his retirement for January. Hollaway was originally scheduled to retire at the end of October, but agreed to delay his retirement for the transition. A search to replace retiring Police Chief Mikel Hollaway has returned two candidates from Florida and three out of state candidates.
Sarasota officials are set to interview five candiates for the police chief post in early October to replace retiring chief Mikel Hollaway. The city announced Friday morning five semifinalists who will be invited to come to Sarasota for interviews with City Manager Tom Barwin, one-on-one interviews with the commission, public vetting and a community forum.
