Benderson Development looks at pulling out the stops in 2014 at its various projects in Sarasota and Manatee counties.
Nobody’s out-and-out saying the Great Recession is over. But one savvy development player is starting to limber up for what could be the Great Recovery. Todd Mathes was a last-minute substitute speaker at the Sarasota County Council of Neighborhood Associations (CONA). He is the director of development for Benderson Development, a Manatee-county based national build-to-rent company specializing in the rehabilitation of shopping centers. It also builds hotels and has other real-estate interests. Benderson has projects in 34 states. In Sarasota and Manatee counties, the company has 25 different projects either under ownership or in development. Mathes came to brief the CONA meeting of neighborhood leaders about his company’s on-going efforts…

Sarasota Crew competed among the best teams in the world during the recent 2011 Head of the Charles regatta; racing the Women’s Youth 8+, Women’s Youth 4+ and Men’s Youth 4+, a Sarasota Crew news release said. The women’s boats consisted of experienced rowers and young developing athletes, and in raw times the Women’s 8 placed 6th and the Women’s 4 placed 56; after a penalty was assessed the Women’s 8 was relegated to 15th place. “We are unhappy with the penalty, but will gladly accept that we avoided a collision to receive it,” stated Emily Goff, the Women’s 8 coxswain. According to Head Coach Casey Galvanek, the Women’s 4 -- consisting of three freshmen and one senior -- performed terrifically against the best competition around. “…

Recent Riverview High graduate Hunter Leeming will begin competition in the Men's 8+ at the 2011 Junior World Rowing Championships on August 3.
Equipped with a little more than aspirations and potential, Hunter Leeming began his foray into the sport of rowing. Leeming was introduced to rowing by family friends and older students at Pine View School for the Gifted. Knowing that there was only one way to find out if it was for him, Leeming enrolled in the Sarasota Crew’s eighth grade program five years ago. “(The eighth grade program) was just twice a week, but I really liked it and wanted to go full-time,” Leeming said. As a high school freshman, Leeming served as a coxswain. However, Sarasota Crew provided him with the foundation and resources to become a champion oarsman. “Through a couple of coaches and along with my genetics because I’ve grown a foot since I was freshman, I …

SARASOTA - On a day reserved annually for the fastest two minutes in sports at Churchill Downs, the inaugural Sarasota Dragon Boat Festival was responsible for the fastest 90 seconds in Nathan Benderson Park history. Teams of 20 paddlers, one sweep and one drummer took to the burgeoning world-class rowing facility in long wooden boats equipped with a golden dragon's head at the bow and a decorative tail at the stern on Saturday. The Champion-manufactured Dragon Boats provided to the teams of corporations, representatives of rowing organizations and collections of friends and family members are the same ones that will be used in the 2011 world championships later this summer in Tampa. After the teams competed in training runs, they were …

The Sarasota Board of County Commissioners approved the funding for the first phases of the rowing facility at Benderson Park.
In July, then-County Parks and Rec General Manager John McCarthy presented a grand idea for a rowing facility at Benderson Park. Drafts, a promo video and big goals were presented for the lake. He said this park could attract a national, and even worldwide, audience. The Commissioners approved the conceptual plan for the rowing facility. "This, my friends, is a big, bold dream," McCarthy said of the Benderson Park plans during the Sarasota Tourist and Economic Development Board's July 29 meeting. "People are saying this is the biggest thing to hit rowing in decades." In December, the commissioners approved the bond revenue appropriations. On Tuesday, the commissioners unanimously approved funding for phase I and II of the three-phase …
