Sarasota's City Commissioners are considering sending community leaders and law enforcement to a city that has proven it can reduce murder rates during a sustained period to replicate that success here.
Sarasota Police Chief Mikel Hollaway doesn’t want to talk to a consultant to figure out how to stop Newtown’s violence. “After 30 years of this, I’m not impressed by consultants,” Hollaway told the Sarasota City Commission Tuesday night. “I don’t really want to talk to David Kennedy.” Kennedy is the man who Commissioner Willie Charles Shaw says is one of the main components in helping develop a permanent solution to Sarasota’s crime and homicides. Sarasota had seven homicides in 2011, all in Newtown, but the crime spills out throughout the region and four additional homicides in 2011, one of which a murder-suicide, took place in unincorporated Sarasota. One additional murder in Sarasota city limits was considered self-defense. Shaw is …

Police believe there are additional people involved in the shooting Sunday and are continuing their investigation. Sutton added he expects additional arrests to be made in this case. All murders that took place in city limits in 2011 happened in North Sarasota and Newtown.
If public officials want to go the code enforcement route for cracking down on properties contributing to homicides, they’ll have a tough time actually finding a structure to nail it on. Out of the seven homicides in city limits, all of the victims except two were found in the street. One victim was shot outside of a home, and another victim died in a home where he likely sought shelter from the shooting before he died, police said. City Commissioner Willie Charles Shaw has called for a collaborative effort of the community, city staff and law enforcement to help stop the murders and suggested the code enforcement route for public nuisance. The first barrier, Capt. Paul Sutton of the Sarasota Police Department said, is the nuisance code …
