Option 5 will cost $30.5 million and other details need to be figured out including if School Avenue should be permanently closed.
A proposed plan to renovate Sarasota High School's 70-acre campus is something the community said it wants, but it's going to be at least $4 million over budget. Scott Lempe, chief operating officer of Sarasota County Schools, presented Tuesday the proposed site planned signed by charrette participants for an upgraded Sarasota High School. Those upgrades for Option 5 will cost $30.5 million, Lempe said, which is $4 million more than the $26.5 million budget the Board of Education provided. "In fairness to Option 5, none of those options could we do for $26.5 million," Lempe said. Also, a solid proposal with a better estimated price could not be figured until late summer, he said. The renovation is to improve security and to update old …

An interactive session to figure out how Sarasota High School will be renovated continues tonight at 5:30. Two design charrettes will let the community to give input on what a remodeled and renovated Sarasota High should look like.
How would you remodel and renovate Sarasota High School? That's what Sarasota County School District officials want to know and the school system is hosting two meetings where the community will be hands on with designing the school. The school's renovation project is slated to begin in late 2012 and to be completed in about two years. The campus once included Sarasota Junior High School until that school was moved to Ashton Road. School officials say the campus is too spread out and has more classrooms than what it needs — including two cafeterias and two gyms from the 1950s that cost too much to maintain. Security and out-of-date instructional spaces are other concerns that the renovated campus must have too, according to the school …

At Tuesday's monthly work session the board approved district staff to come up with a master plan for the renovation.
The project is in its infancy but Sarasota County School officials are planning on a multi-million dollar renovation to multiple buildings at Sarasota High. At Tuesday's monthly work session, the school board unanimously approved staff to internally come up with a master plan for the school's renovation. Approval came after a lengthy presentation and discussion about the district's construction priorities. According to a capital project matrix the schools that have the most renovation needs, along with Sarasota High, are Bay Haven Elementary, Gocio Elementary and Pine View School. "Based on a whole lot of analysis, we focused on Sarasota High School," said district chief operating officer Scott Lempe. "If you’ve been on that campus, …

This year's squad is just the latest in a long line of Sarasota teams to raise funds through the sale of Christmas trees
SARASOTA - What the everyday driver on South Tamiami Trail may mistake for another Christmas tree lot represents so much more to Ron Jones. Jones took a minute out of his busy day recently to watch the sunset from inside the fenced-in space, located just north of the old Sarasota High School building. The longtime Sarasota High wrestling coach has done this routinely since his charges began the annual fundraiser more than a quarter-century ago. "Your stress just releases out here," said Jones, who took over the Sarasota program in 1982 and later earned Hall of Fame recognition from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. "When you come out in the forest with the people you love, there is no stress." In addition to all of …
