Exceptional Addresses in Sarasota

Truly unique and exceptional properties on the market in Sarasota are "such stuff as dreams are made on" to borrow a line from Shakespeare.

Fortunate are the people of Sarasota.  Blessed to live in a location with marvelous open beaches, mild climate and friendly waters, it is no small wonder that many people of wealth choose this town for their first, second, third or even fourth luxury home. As a consequence, some truly exceptional and unique properties have been constructed along these shores. For 70 years, the Sarasota School of Architecture has been making an impact here, which in turn encourages other bold displays of nouveau style. Two neighborhoods in particular stand out for exceptional construction: The Sanderling Club on south Siesta Key and Lido Key, home to St Armand's Circle.  From time to time, these modern classics appear on the market, frequently sporting …

Proposed Sarasota High Renovation Is Over Budget

Option 5 will cost $30.5 million and other details need to be figured out including if School Avenue should be permanently closed.

A proposed plan to renovate Sarasota High School's 70-acre campus is something the community said it wants, but it's going to be at least $4 million over budget. Scott Lempe, chief operating officer of Sarasota County Schools, presented Tuesday the proposed site planned signed by charrette participants for an upgraded Sarasota High School.  Those upgrades for Option 5 will cost $30.5 million, Lempe said, which is $4 million more than the $26.5 million budget the Board of Education provided. "In fairness to Option 5, none of those options could we do for $26.5 million," Lempe said. Also, a solid proposal with a better estimated price could not be figured until late summer, he said. The renovation is to improve security and to update old …

I was on the board many years ago when they added to Sarasota High School, took down the middle school and extended the high school to across School Ave. At the time the neighborhood (we were asked to be involved, they wanted to know what we thought) did not want School Ave. closed but they closed it anyway during school hours. I am very much against closing School Ave. I do not feel this is …   more ›

Sarasota High Charrette Continues Tonight

A design charrette will offer residents a way to have their say in an interactive setting for how to renovate Sarasota High School's campus.

An interactive session to figure out how Sarasota High School will be renovated continues tonight at 5:30. The meeting will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m., Thursday, June 7, in the Conference Center at the Sarasota County Technical Institute, 4748 Beneva Road in Sarasota. The first meeting held Wednesday is an open forum for parents, school district staff, business leaders, neighbors and other community members to examine the issues involved; to learn what needs to be done to update the campus; to look at some proposed site plans and to express their expectations and concerns. There, many folks opposed using glass to enclose Building 4's breezeway, reports The Herald-Tribune: "Strong support was expressed for the options that would keep the …

What Should Sarasota High School Look Like?

Two design charrettes will let the community to give input on what a remodeled and renovated Sarasota High should look like.

How would you remodel and renovate Sarasota High School?  That's what Sarasota County School District officials want to know and the school system is hosting two meetings where the community will be hands on with designing the school. The school's renovation project is slated to begin in late 2012 and to be completed in about two years. The campus once included Sarasota Junior High School until that school was moved to Ashton Road. School officials say the campus is too spread out and has more classrooms than what it needs — including two cafeterias and two gyms from the 1950s that cost too much to maintain. Security and out-of-date instructional spaces are other concerns that the renovated campus must have too, according to the school …

Wasn't that high school just built at tax payer expense? I visited it and it is the ugliest building that was ever designed for a school.   more ›

Sarasota School and Modern Masterpieces

The rarity of Sarasota's unique School of Architecture and more Moderns on the open market keeps the price high and local architectural history intact.

Local history is not only written by local politicians, but also by the architects who, through time, tell our local story with masonry and glass. When looking for a modern home to call your own in Sarasota, it can be difficult. Though Sarasota has its own renowned School of Architecture that combines German Bauhaus with Lloyd-Wright organic, owners of these glorious properties rarely part with them. Fans of the modern look may also quickly become disillusioned with the price tag on these rarities. Nonetheless, a few show up from time to time. As a buyer of a modern home, learn the architects of the area: Rudolph, Twitchell, Seibert, Abbott, Peterson, Parks and Haflants are the most frequently heard names. Rudolph and Twitchell were the …
