Payne Skate Park Manager, School Teacher Dies In Crash

Florida Highway Patrol said 35-year-old Daniel P Giguere lost control of his car and drove into oncoming traffic, crashing into another vehicle.

The manager of the Payne Skate Park and teacher at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences died Friday morning after a crash on U.S. 41. Daniel P. Giguere, 35, of Bradenton, was pronounced dead at the scene after he he lost control of his car and drove into oncoming traffic on U.S. 41 north of Seagate Drive in Manatee County, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Giguere was the president of the nonprofit Sk8skool, which operated the skate park at Payne Park. He also was a physical education teacher at the School of Arts and Sciences, which is a charter school. His love of skateboarding was strong at the school, too, where he even had skateboards and longboards available for students. Giguere coached basketball at the school where he was …

The Rosemary District charter school celebrated its completion of its campus on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Sarasota School of Arts & Sciences celebrated its completed campus in Sarasota's Rosemary District Tuesday after two years of construction and more than a decade in the works. The charter school features a 43,000-square-foot classroom building, a 10,000- square-foot gymnasium plus another building for instruction that students call "the tower." The school began through conversations with a group around the dinner table of Susan Burns and public defender Laurence Eger in 1994, leading to the opening of the school in 1997. "We talked about emphasizing the arts and the sciences because we do have an incredibly successful arts community here and we have a beautiful environment here," said founding board member Devin Rutkowski. Sarasota Teacher Arrested For Sexual Battery

Karate instructor John Garcia was arrested for having sex seven years ago with a Sarasota School of the Arts and Sciences student.

A karate instructor at the Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences is being held in Sarasota County jail without bond following charges he had sex seven years ago with a student in his classroom. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested John Garcia, 47 of 2816 Poplar St., Sarasota, for allegedly having sex with a student seven years ago. Garcia was taken into custody Friday morning and charged with Custodial Sexual Battery on a Child, according to the sheriff's office. A former student told detectives that Garcia had sex with her in his classroom when he was 41-years-old and she was just 14-years-old, according to the sheriff's office. I had this teacher about 4 years ago. From 6th to 8th grade he was one of my favorite techers and a man I looked up to in so many ways. I also took his karate class after school...He taught me everything I know about a sport that I was ao passionate about. It angrys and hurts me to know that all that time he was doing these things. Its an awful realazation..and I hope he gets the tine he deserves.   more ›
