Weekly Tails From Southeastern Guide Dogs

Southeastern Guide Dogs is in Sarasota too!

Typically this column talks about the goings on at Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Palmetto Campus. But this week, we wanted to turn the focus south to our Sarasota location.

September 2010 saw the expansion of Southeastern Guide Dogs into a new area: Sarasota.  Southeastern took over the building formerly inhabited by Scoop Management, where, unfortunately a number of locals were the victims of Art Nadal’s nefarious business practices.  And really, what better way to change the karma in a building than making it the home base of a non-profit? Southeastern Guide Dogs Sarasota Training Center and Dog Boutique now serves as a place where the general public can come and learn about guide dogs and the amazing work they do.  A new program is launching April 10th that will allow participants to “Shadow a Guide Dog Trainer.”  This fun, informative weekly workshop will explain the methods used to train guide dogs and …

In two years time, Manatee and Sarasota counties will have a shared destination for high-end shopping. Officials ceremoniously broke ground with confetti guns a blazing Monday afternoon on the 888,000-square-foot Mall at University Town Center located north of Nathan Benderson Park. "The shopping center, in conjunction with the Nathan Benderson Rowing Facility, will be a world-class destination and a tremendous community benefit for generations to come." The $315 million mall is a partnership between developers Taubman Centers and University Park-…

The high end stores are okay such as Saks Fifth Avenue. They attract their demographic wealthy women in Sarasota. Hopefully this mall is inclusive and attracts all demographics such as regular men that are interested in the outdoors. Reading the above statements I hear a Bass Pro Shops may be there and that would be huge. I don't like driving 45 minutes to Fort Myers for one store and I usually …   more ›

Walmart Proposes 'Small Supercenter' At Ringling Shopping Center

If approved, the Ringling Shopping Center would be demolished in favor of a 98,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter.

Walmart wants to build a "small Supercenter" store by demolishing the rundown Ringling Shopping Center. Walmart submitted a pre-application to the Sarasota Planning Department May 30 calling for a 97,779-square-foot store with 370 regular parking spaces, 13 handicap spaces and 10 cart corrals at the shopping center off of Ringling Boulevard. “We’ve been fortunate to have a great relationship with the City of Sarasota and the shoppers,” Walmart spokesman Bill Wertz told Patch. The store would be the second Walmart in city limits, as a Walmart Neighborhood Market is slated to open on the North Trail in October. The Ringling store would be a “small Supercenter” format, Wertz said, offering general merchandise, pharmacy, deli, produce, …

I was perfectly happy with Publix when it was there, but it didn't seem to attract enuff over flow customers to support the other small businesses, ie $ store and various restaurants left empty for 2 or more years. I think it's the sort of business that would do well in that part of town, maybe even helping the small strip of businesses acdross from them. If anyone hasn't noticed, the same …   more ›

Commissioner Wants City To Help Southgate Mall

Commissioner Shannon Snyder wants to make sure the Westfield Southgate Mall doesn’t become barren or cheapened after a planned Saks Fifth Avenue departure.

Commissioner Shannon Snyder wants to make sure the Westfield Southgate Mall doesn’t become barren or cheapened after a planned Saks Fifth Avenue departure. Snyder proposed to the commission Monday that the commission ought to discuss the mall at some point to help it transition. “I don’t have an answer. I would just like to bring it to the commission’s attention so that we can focus on it before it deteriorates into a tournament of glow-in-the-dark goofy golf like they have down in Sarasota Square Mall for a while,” Snyder said, referencing Westfield’s other property where it has Lunar Mini Golf where Steve and Berry’s once was and also has a miniature synthetic ice rink in another wing of the mall. “I don’t know what the answer is, but I …

Michele Myers opens a great new art gallery

A bright, colorful new gallery, The Artful Giraffe, has opened on St. Armand’s Circle.  With a focus on local art and artists, owner Michele Myers is brightening the Circle with uplifting art created by a wide array of artists.  Myers intent is to represent artists whose desire is to enhance others’ lives and whose artwork lifts one’s spirits.  It looks like she’s succeeding nicely. Customers are already commenting about how happy and uplifted they feel while in the gallery.  Asked why she named the gallery The Artful Giraffe, Myers smiles and said that she had two incredible grandmothers whom she loved greatly.  One of them had an extensive giraffe collection.
