Miguel Tejada Expected To Report To Sarasota

The two-time former Oriole is expected to report to Extended Spring Training Monday at Ed Smith Stadium on a tryout.

Former All-Star shortstop Miguel Tejada is expected to report to Sarasota on Monday as part of a tryout for the Baltimore Orioles, according to media reports. The 37-year-old Dominican Republic native, who's living in Ft. Lauderdale, hopes to make the Major League roster, but will first report to Extended Spring Training at Ed Smith Stadium, ESPN.com reports. Tejada could be used at third base, The Baltimore Sun reports. This is like a second chance for Tejada after he pled guilty to misleading Congressional investigators in 2009 concerning steroid allegations while with the Houston Astros. It was a misdemeanor charge. Tejada told The Associated Press  that he will relish the opportunity: "I'm very happy to have reached this agreement. I …

O's Spring Training Attendance Down from 2011

Orioles Spring Training attendance dips in 2012 compared to 2011, but this year's figures don't include attendance for college games.

The Baltimore Orioles Spring Training couldn't top its record attendance in 2011 during this year's season at Ed Smith Stadium. The O's drew 106,398 people at its games this year, averaging about 7,093 people per game, according to numbers released by Florida Sports today. The comparison isn't complete yet as Florida Sports did not count attendance played against college teams or minor league teams — the Orioles played against Florida Southern College and State College of Florida — in addition to playing one less home game overall than last year. The Orioles don't count those two games either, according to a team spokesman. "We are very pleased with attendance considering the schedule was not as favorable and we had the one fewer home game…

The real key norm is actually that though it's one less game, it's that there were two games played against college teams and Florida Sports did not count any games not played against another Major League team, and we contacted the O's yesterday to get those figures and have not heard back to get the true figures. When they respond, we'll add them.   more ›

Florida Spring Training History: Wrestling Alligators and Cash

Spring training in Florida has had a colorful history with the temptations of the warm climate for players and temptations of cash for owners.

The Florida Grapefruit League, otherwise known as the annual baseball spring training ritual, has been a part of the history and tradition of central Florida for more than 120 years. According to numerous history accounts, including a Florida publication, Spring Training Online:  “Spring training is almost as old as baseball itself. The best evidence points to spring training first taking place in 1870, when the Cincinnati Red Stockings and the Chicago White Stockings held organized baseball camps in New Orleans… Other baseball historians argue that the Washington Capitals of the National League pioneered spring training in 1888, holding a four-day camp in Jacksonville.” Above and beyond the obvious fact that February in Florida is a whole…

Orioles, Pirates Celebrate Miracle Field

Several players and coaches and front office executives from the teams cut the ribbon Saturday on the Orioles Pirates Miracle League Field of Manasota in Longwood Park, just south of University Parkway on 6050 Longwood Run Blvd.

Twice foes in the World Series in 1971 and 1979, the Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations are sharing their name on a field of miracles in Sarasota. Several players and coaches and front office executives from the teams cut the ribbon Saturday on the Orioles Pirates Miracle League Field of Manasota in Longwood Park, just south of University Parkway on 6050 Longwood Run Blvd.  “What began four years ago as a dream is now a reality,” Miracle League of Manasota President Bob Mitchell said. “The Miracle League Field of Manasota is now ready for play. Players with special needs can enjoy playing baseball on a unique surface specially built for them. Our goal is to create an environment where self-esteem can flourish and with …

Orioles Spring Training Pays Homage To History And Looks To The Future

The history of Baltimore baseball goes back 130 years. This year much of the Orioles history is not taking place on the field as much as the personnel – and physical changes - in the operations center

Last Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles pitchers began the annual two-month spring training ritual at the Ed Smith Stadium and the rest of their teammates take to the field today. When this Maryland writer arrived last Saturday in Sarasota, the temperatures were unseasonably warm, but certainly not as warm as the hot seat Buck Showalter, the 55-year-old DeFuniak Springs, Florida native and returning Orioles manager must be feeling. The following day when the pitchers and catchers took to the field, dark skies and rain followed — a combination coupled with that warm Saturday seems to be the regular forecast pattern for the O's this season. Showalter, the two-time American League Manager of the Year, who took over the helm of the ailing Birds on …

Orioles Baseball Operations Center Readies for Spring

Baltimore Orioles' renovation of its Baseball Operations Center is nearly complete, readying for players to report this week.

When the Baltimore Orioles train in Sarasota, they'll be doing so in style at the team's new Baseball Operations Center.  The 43,000-square-foot building is about one and a half times the size of the old building and features just about everything a pro ball player will need. It's located beside Ed Smith Stadium. Hydrotherapy pools, hot and cold baths, a fully stocked kitchen, exercise room and more. Throughout the operations center, there are touches of Orioles' history. They include retired numbers, such as one signed by Earl Weaver, logos, and images of Spring Training past in Miami and Daytona Beach and even the Arizona years.  When the Orioles defeated the Cincinatti Reds for the 1970 World Series, Pulitzer Prize winning reporter Jim …
