Brave Runners To Pound The Ground At Sarasota Celery Fields

Pound The Ground 5K obstacle challenge takes over the Celery Fields on Saturday.

Obstacle courses mixed in with 5k races are the thing to do for runners who want a little spice in their marathon, and the latest is taking over the Celery Fields on Saturday. Pound The Ground will race arount the Celery Fields, 6893 Palmer Blvd., with the first wave at 7:30 a.m., and the final wave at 10:30 a.m. You can still reigster the day of the event for $50. The event is designed for ages 14 and up. Much like Tough Mudder races, you'll get dirty and run into a few surprises along the way. The course was designed by a Sarasota fitness instructor to challenge and reward adventurous fitness buffs and to raise money for local charities, according to organizers. Tough Mudder Causes Severe Delays On I-75, Clark Road This Weekend

Traffic delays are expected to last throughout Saturday and Sunday.

Updated 10:25 p.m. Interstate 75 experienced delays as far as 5 miles on I-75 South from the Clark Road exit due to today's Tough Mudder race, and several hourlong delays will return on Sunday.  The marathon race is taking place Saturday and Sunday at Hi Hat Ranch on State Route 72 (Clark Road). Delays could be possible again Sunday. Drivers can expect traffic backups between 6-10 a.m. Sunday morning, and again from 3-7 p.m. Sunday evening, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. Sarasota County Emergency Services officials recommend that travelers avoid the area through the weekend. This event is put on to raise money for The Wounded Warrior Project, it's a fantastic event and worthwhile charity that does so much good for our wounded heroes. I'm so very sorry you were all inconvenienced, I'm sure the event planners will find a more hospitable location to hold the event at next year. Sarasota has so much going on this weekend, we can't keep it to just five for this edition of Weekend Things. 1. Santa Claus is coming to town on Saturday for Sarasota's annual Holiday Parade. The parade starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at Main Street and U.S. 301 and travel west on Main Street to Bayfront Drive.
