Celebrate Singles Awareness Day in Sarasota

If you're single on Valentine's Day, the world is your oyster!

If you haven’t been shot with Cupid’s arrow yet or your Valentine is yet to be found because he or she is still hiding under a rock, fear not. You have a whole list of things to celebrate on Feb. 14, also known to many as Singles Awareness Day. It’s great to be single on Valentine's Day because you don’t have to please anyone or care about anyone’s opinion of what you want to do. Go see that horrible or cheesy movie that you’d never go to on a date at Regal Cinemas Hollywood 20 or Burns Court Cinema. You can also really enjoy being with your friends. Get a group together and go to a fun Sarasota restaurant. If dining out isn’t your thing, go biking or take a run in the great Sarasota sunshine with friends to get your endorphin count up. …

Weekly Tails From Southeastern Guide Dogs

Make A Difference This Valentine’s Day

Looking for a unique gift for Valentine’s Day? How about independence and freedom?

It is estimated that Americans will spend approximately $18 billion, that’s BILLION, with a B, on Valentine’s Day this year.  While I admit, it is really nice to receive a beautiful bouquet of flowers, box of chocolates, and enjoy a nice night out, I'd like to see just what could be done if that $18 billion were used a different way.  With $18 billion, Southeastern Guide Dogs could breed, raise, train, place and provide follow-up care for 300,000 guide dog teams.  Or we could feed almost 50,000,000 dogs-in-training for a year. Or 5,100,000+ people could have puppies-in-training named after them.  Or we could purchase more than 60,000,000 guide dog harnesses and leashes.  Wow! To bring those numbers down to more feasible terms, the average …

Powel Crosley Concert Is Not 'Just Another Day' With Jon Secada

Secada will perform a special Valentine's Day concert at the Powel Crosley Estate as part of a Chillounge Night experience.

Update Feb. 12: Due to inclement weather in the forecast, the concert with Jon Secada has been moved to Flight Source hangar, 1244 Clyde Jones Road, beside the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport. Original: The Powel Crosley Estate has long been a romantic place, hosting weddings and receptions with its view over Sarasota Bay. Throw in Jon Secada to sing your sweetheart a love song while you're on a couch, and she'll probably say "I do."  The Grammy Award-winning singer known for his hit love songs including "Just Another Day" will come to Sarasota for a special Valentine's Day concert Chillounge Night called Return to Romance. "Jon Secada on Valentine's Day—he can play anywhere," said Chillounge founder Rainer Scheer, of Anna Maria …

Top Sarasota Make Out Spots

When a kiss isn't enough, these places in Sarasota seem to spark the mood.

Maybe it is the gentle waves crashing on Siesta Key Beach or the beautiful flowers at Selby Gardens that inspire the romantic side in couples looking for more than a peck on the cheek or a quick kiss. Somtimes, making out just happens. We turned to our Facebook fans last week asking for their best spots, and we thank Jason Robert White for divulging some of his secrets – from picnics, dates and photoshoots. His contributions have more area spots in Longboat Key, including Quick Point Park, just over/under the bridge from Lido Key and another Sarasota spot to try at your own risk. So if public displays of affection is your thing, here's Jason's list for you to consider: • The old pier and rocks at Avenida Messina and Beach Road on Siesta …

That would be a prime spot if you're into everyone see you, too with all that traffic. Might get a few people honking their horns! That could break the mood haha. I would add Sarasota Jungle Gardens on here now that I think about it. It is the call of the wild (har har har). But the backdrop of flamingos at the pond could be romantic.   more ›

Chorus of the Keys Offers Singing Valentines

Sarasota Chorus of the Keys will offer its annual Singing Valentines this year to sing to your significant other just about anywhere you need them to.

Hello my honey, hello my baby, hello my Valentine. And hello to Sarasota Chorus of the Keys. The chorus will offer its annual Singing Valentines throughout the Sarasota and Bradenton area on Feb. 14 when you can send a barbershop quartet to a home or office complete with a card, a rose and two love songs. “This is probably one of our favorite activities,” said Bob Amer, marketing director of the Chorus. ”The expressions on the faces of the singing valentine recipients are absolutely priceless. They love receiving a singing valentine far more than they do a card or a box of candy. This means a lot more to them.” The Sarasota Chorus of the Keys is the oldest continuous arts group in Sarasota with a more than 60-year history and 100 members. …

Study: Sarasota Has Some of the Most Sensitive Men

Sarasota lands on dating site Chemistry.com as one of 10 cities where you can find yourself a sensitive man.

How often does your man buy you flowers? And if it's a lot, by chance, is he from Sarasota? A recent Chemistry.com survey found that Sarasota is one of the top 10 homes to finding a sensitive man: “Men do have a sensitive side. They want to please. But different men do it differently; and these 10 cities are packed with a certain kind of man, what I call BUILDERS — men who express a constellation of personality traits linked with the serotonin system in the brain,” says Dr. Helen Fisher, Chief Scientific Advisor to Chemistry.com. (Do you want to share your sensitive man with Sarasota? Upload a photo of him on this story and tell us why he's sensitive.) Fisher also told The Huffington Post that there several traits to these men. They are: "…

Had a good question e-mailed to me from a woman asking where you can find one of these sensitive men described by Chemistry.com in Sarasota. Any answers out there to help her out? I'm sure the sponsors of the study would say Chemistry.com but there has to be some real world places to meet someone here if there's all that sensitivity going around.   more ›
