Veterans Day Closings In Sarasota

Sarasota city and county government offices are closed in observance of Veterans Day.

Both Sarasota city and county government offices and libraries will be closed today in observance on Veterans Day. In the city, the closing affects City Hall, the Federal Building and Public Works, although solid waste and recycling collection will not be impacted. All Sarasota County government offices, including libraries, recreation centers and the Sarasota County History Center will be closed today in observance of Veterans Day. The following Sarasota County Parks and Recreation facilities will be open: The Knight Trail Park Pistol and Rifle Range and the Englewood Sports Complex will be closed.  Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) bus service, including paratransit service, will operate on its regular schedule on Veterans Day. Sarasota Veterans Day Parade Is Sunday

Parade will start at Main Street and Osprey Avenue and conclude with a ceremony at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park.

The annual Veterans’ Day parade in downtown Sarasota on Veterans’ Day will start at 10 a.m., Sunday. The parade begins at Main Street and Osprey Avenue. A program will begin at about 11 a.m. at the parade's conclusion at Chaplain J.D. Hamel Park at Main Street and Gulfstream Avenue.  The keynote speaker will be Tuskegee Airman George E. Hardy, Lt. Col. USAF (Retired). Hardy became the youngest Tuskegee Airman when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1944.  He flew 21 combat missions over Germany, 45 combat missions over Korea, and 70 combat missions during the Vietnam War.  Hardy was honored with the Distinguished Flying Cross with valor, the Air Medal with 11 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf …

With Veterans Day this weekend, it seemed to be the perfect time to highlight how we, at Southeastern Guide Dogs, honor our veterans.

In 2006 Southeastern Guide Dogs created a program that is near and dear to many people’s hearts because it serves our veterans.  An extension of Southeastern’s mission of matching people with visual impairments with world class guide dogs, this program looked to serve veterans returning from war with visual impairments. After hearing from the graduates of that program whose dogs acted as catalysts for mobility and independence, but also helped them transition back to civilian life by providing a constant calming influence, Southeastern created a further extension of the program to serve veterans living with post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Veterans, Public Invited To McIntosh Middle Program

McIntosh Middle School is hosting its annual Salute To Veterans assembly on Friday.

McIntosh Middle School world history teacher Jill Rothenberg's challenge has been the same for more than a decade—make sure her students know and thank veterans. But before they could do that, some of the sixth and seventh graders she teaches had to learn what even a veteran is. "Most children didn't know who a veteran was, and most kids did not know the names of the five branches of service," Rothenberg tells Patch. Sarasota Schools To Salute Veterans This Week

Several schools in Sarasota will honor veterans through concerts, parades, assemblies and other programs.

Sarasota schools will honor military veterans throughout this week and next week with special events planned in the area. Several veterans have been invited to schools to participate in events.
