Sarasota County Commission has rescheduled its public hearing for a rezone request to allow a Walmart Neighborhood Market for April 24.
In Sarasota, a Walmart is never approved or denied in a day. The County Commissioners decided Wednesday to push back a public hearing for a rezoning to allow a Walmart Neighborhood Market at the corner of Bee Ridge and Beneva Roads due to the absence of Commission Chairwoman Carolyn Mason. Mason was ill, according to the commission, leaving the possibility of a deadlocked vote. The hearing is now scheduled for April 24 at the Sarasota County Administration Building. The rezone request is to change the property from Office, Professional and Institutional to Commercial General, in order to allow a grocery/retail store. The site is now the River's Edge Community Church, which first opened in 1960 as the Holy Cross Lutheran Church then later …

As fall begins, Sarasota just got through a summer of grocery store renovations and openings. Which was was your favorite?
Updated 9:40 a.m. Sept. 25 As fall begins and Sarasota awaits the return of the snowbirds, they'll find that grocery shopping has changed quite a bit just during the summer alone. To review: • Winn-Dixie opens renovated store on Fruitville Road • Target remodels Fruitville Road store and adds groceries • Trader Joe's Opens In Sarasota • Walmart Neighborhood Market Opens On North Trail • Costco Opens at Westfield Sarasota Square Between all the grocery stores, whole food stores, gourmet markets, it seems that there's an option on every corner to get groceries in Sarasota, and some stores like Publix that already open new stores in the last year, are now tweaking features, like deli ordering. The area did lose Albertsons in early June, …

The North Trail Walmart Neighborhood Market opened its doors Wednesday morning to an eager crowd of shoppers.
Sarasota—Walmart is now open for business. The North Trail Walmart Neighborhood Market opened its doors Wednesday morning following much fanfare, giveaways and even a Walmart cheer. Store Manager Jeff Douglas is at the helm of the first Walmart in Sarasota city limits, located at 3500 N. Tamiami Trail, on the corner of Myrtle Avenue. "We are in your neighborhood, so thank you for welcoming us," he told the crowd, standing in front of Walmart associates from various stores, dignitaries, guests and oh yeah — a filled parking lot of customers. The presentations included music by Booker High School, a flag ceremony with students from the JROTC program and check presentations to various community groups (see below). Mayor Suzanne Atwell …

While the Sarasota Walmart Neighborhood Market focuses on groceries, it stands on its own when it comes to Walmarts in Sarasota.
The Walmart Neighborhood Market on the North Trail is in many ways unlike your typical Walmart. While you can't get your oil change here or buy a TV off the shelf, the grocery store still offers a variety of services and options that a Walmart discount store might not in the area. And it's not open 24/7. The Neighborhood Market, 3500 N. Tamiami Trail, opens today at 8 a.m., then opens daily 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The store is managed by Jeff Douglas, who gave Patch a tour of the new store Tuesday. (Read more about Jeff Douglas' Walmart journey on Patch.) Out of the thousands of Walmarts, there are only 200 Neighborhood Markets in the country. However, Tampa Bay has a good concentration of Neighborhood Markets. There are two Neighborhood …

The Walmart Neighborhood Market is one of 200 of its kind in the nation, offering predominately groceries.
Grocery shopping on the corner of North Tamiami Trail and Myrtle Street is set to return Wednesday. The first Walmart in Sarasota city limits will open as a Walmart Neighborhood Market at 8 a.m. Wednesday, following a ribbon cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m. The store replaces a former Winn-Dixie at 3500 N. Tamiami Trail. “Welcome to the neighborhood,” said Sarasota Mayor Suzanne Atwell in a statement. “Walmart will be a game changer for North Sarasota and beyond by bringing a quality and much-needed product to a great community.” The store is like a reversal of the Walmarts of old — instead of a large area full of clothing, surrounded by toys, electronics and bedding, it's mainly groceries with a pharmacy, health and beauty products, some pet…
