UPDATE: Detectives Say Bradenton Man Killed Brother During Robbery

Detectives say the shooter, Joshuat Lopez-Santana inadvertently killed his brother while shooting at an apartment to collect $300.

UPDATE April 9:

A Brandeton man is dead after he was inadvertently shot in the back of the head by his brother on Easter while the two were shooting at an apartment in North Sarasota to collect a bad debt, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.

The has arrested Joshuat Lopez-Santana, 19, of 1001 Temple Avenue, Bradenton, in connection with the double shooting in Sarasota on Sunday afternoon.

Detectives say Lopez-Santana, along with his 17-year-old brother Carlos Lopez-Santana, drove to 3942 Butler Avenue to collect an alleged debt of $300, according to the probable cause affidavit.

Witnesses say as the Lopez brothers got out of their vehicle they immediately began firing toward the apartment. One of the bullets narrowly missed a man who was standing in the doorway and another bullet from Joshuat’s handgun struck Carlos in the back of the head, detectives say. Carlos died from his injury.

Two men, resident 33-year-old Edwin Gonzales and his friend 23-year-old George Acosta-Mata, ran out of the rear door of the apartment. Joshuat caught up with Gonzales and shot him twice, according to detectives while Acosta-Mata was not injured.

After shooting Edwin, Joshuat returned to the front of the apartments, found Carlos and loaded him into the car, detectives say. Joshuat left the scene but wrecked his Mercury Grand Marquis nearby, just as deputies caught up with him and took him into custody, according to the sheriff's office.

Gonzalez was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton where he is in stable condition.

Joshuat Lopez-Santana is charged with one count of felony murder, one count of first degree attempted murder and one count of second degree attempted murder, according to the sherrif's office.

He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail late Sunday night and is being held without bond.

Earlier: Two people are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds this afternoon at Blake Memorial Hospital after a shooting on the 3942 of Butler Avenue.

The is currently investigating the shooting and has a suspect in custody they believe is responsible for the crime.

The sheriff’s office responded to a report of a shooting shortly after 1 p.m. today where they found the two victims.

Investigators believe the suspect acted alone.

The investigation is ongoing and no other details have been released at this time.
